Paleo - Is It Worth the Hype?

By now, you probably know at least one person who has tried the Paleo diet, or perhaps you've tried the diet yourself.  The Paleo, or "Caveman Diet", promotes eating mostly: meats, nuts, berries, and vegetables.  The diet shuns grains and starches (including corn), beans, legumes (including peanuts and lentils), and dairy.  Since cavemen didn't eat these foods, supposedly modern day society shouldn't either.

I appreciate that the diet promotes whole foods over processed foods and it may help its followers be more aware of what they are eating on a daily basis.  However, the premise that all grains, beans, and dairy are fattening and should be restricted is short-sighted.  In fact, some of the foods that are considered "off limits" can be a source of resistant starch, which can help with maintaining a healthy weight.

There are many factors to take into account when evaluating if a person's food choices are balanced, such as nutrient timing, macronutrient proportion, plus the person's thoughts and beliefs about his/her food choices, and more.  That being said, the greatest "issue" I have with the Paleo diet is it outlines specific "good" and "bad" foods, just like most diets.  Ironically, if a food is deemed "off limits" or is restricted, this food will automatically have a greater appeal than if it isn't forbidden.  If you have a history of following diets, making peace with food is key to achieving genuine health and well-being, not following a diet plan.
